Runes are the universal currency of power in Elden Ring — they buy levels, upgrade materials, spells, and consumables. While normal gameplay provides enough runes to beat the game comfortably, sometimes you need a boost: a weapon with a stat requirement you are 5 points short of, a boss that demands 10 more Vigor, or a new build you want to try without respeccing. This guide covers the best farming locations at every stage of the game.

Early Game: Greyoll (75,000 Instant Runes)
Greyoll is the massive immobile dragon in Dragonbarrow, Caelid. She does not fight back and has ~90,000 HP. With a bleed weapon (Morning Star or any katana), you can kill her in about 5 minutes at level 1.
How to reach: Use the teleporter behind the Third Church of Marika (eastern Limgrave). It sends you to the Bestial Sanctum. Ride past the Black Blade Kindred to reach Fort Faroth (the dragon is right outside).
Maximize yield: Equip the Gold Scarab talisman (+20% runes) before the killing blow. The talisman is found in the Abandoned Cave in Caelid — enter from the cliff edge east of the Smoldering Wall grace. Also, eat a Gold-Pickled Fowl Foot right before Greyoll dies for an extra 30%.
Important: Greyoll does not respawn. This is a one-time 75,000-97,500 rune injection — enough to reach level 35+ from level 1.
Early-Mid Game: Warrior Jar Bairn Loop (Limgrave)
After meeting Iron Fist Alexander in Limgrave and progressing his quest, head to Jarburg (south Liurnia, drop down the cliffside gravestone platforms from the Carian Study Hall bridge). The small jar enemies here drop ~200 runes each in NG and are non-hostile. Kill all jars, rest at the grace, repeat.
Yield: ~50,000-70,000/hour in NG. Low but completely risk-free.
Mid-Game: Vulgar Militia (Bestial Sanctum)
Outside the Bestial Sanctum in Dragonbarrow, Caelid, small Vulgar Militia enemies patrol in groups. Each drops 1,000-1,200 runes in NG (base, without boosters). They have low HP and are weak to backstabs.
Strategy: Equip a critical-boost weapon (Misericorde with Flame of the Redmanes), sneak up, backstab, move to the next. Rest at the Bestial Sanctum grace to reset.
Yield: ~120,000 runes/hour in NG with Gold Scarab. ~240,000 in NG+.
Late Game: Mohgwyn Palace Albinauric Farm (Best Overall)
This is the undisputed best farming spot in Elden Ring. Two variants:
Method 1: The Bird (Early Access — No Fighting)
From the Palace Approach Ledge-Road grace, look across the chasm. A giant crow patrols on the far cliff. Shoot it with a single arrow, and it runs off the cliff, dying instantly. Rest and repeat.

Method 2: Albinauric Genocide (Best Yield — Requires Sacred Relic Sword)
From the same grace, turn around. The hillside is packed with passive Albinaurics. Use Sacred Relic Sword’s Wave of Gold weapon art to clear them in two casts. Rest and repeat.

How to Reach Mohgwyn Palace Early
You do not need to reach the Mountaintops. As soon as you reach Liurnia of the Lakes:
- Complete White-Faced Varre’s quest at Rose Church (Liurnia). Invade three times (you do not need to win), then soak the Lord of Blood’s Favor cloth in maiden blood (Church of Inhibition in northeast Liurnia).
- Varre gives you the Pureblood Knight’s Medal. Use it to teleport directly to Mohgwyn Palace.
- Ride through the palace (avoiding enemies) to reach the Palace Approach Ledge-Road grace.
Total time from game start to bird farm: ~30 minutes if you know the route.
Rune Boosting Stack
Maximize every farming session by stacking these boosts:

When to Stop Leveling
For PvE completion, level 120-150 is the sweet spot. Beyond level 200, stat soft caps make further investment diminishing. For PvP, consider capping at RL125 or RL150 to maintain active matchmaking.
The Mohgwyn Palace farm can take you from level 80 to 150 in under an hour in NG+. Spend runes on Vigor first (soft cap at 60), then your primary damage stat (soft cap at 80).
