Magic in Elden Ring is divided into two major categories: Sorceries, which scale with Intelligence, and Incantations, which scale with Faith. Both systems offer powerful offensive and utility options that can carry you through the entire game. This guide explains how magic works, where to find the best spells, and how to build an effective caster.
What You Need to Get Started
To cast Sorceries, you need a Glintstone Staff equipped in your right hand and the spell memorized at a Site of Grace. To cast Incantations, you need a Sacred Seal equipped and the incantation memorized. You can memorize multiple spells at once, limited by your Memory Slots, which are increased by finding Memory Stones throughout the game.
FP is the resource that fuels all spellcasting. Every spell costs a certain amount of FP to cast, and you restore FP by drinking the Cerulean Flask. Investing in the Mind stat increases your maximum FP pool. Most dedicated casters aim for 30 to 40 Mind, which provides enough FP to clear entire areas between flask refills.
The most important talisman for any caster is the Radagon Icon, which significantly reduces spell casting time. For sorcerers, the Graven-School Talisman and Graven-Mass Talisman boost sorcery damage. For faith casters, the Flock Canvas Talisman and Faithful Canvas Talisman boost incantation damage. These stacking bonuses make a substantial difference in your effectiveness.
How to Build an Effective Sorcerer
Intelligence is your primary stat and should be leveled to 60 or 80 for maximum damage. The Carian Regal Scepter is the best all-around staff for high Intelligence builds, obtained by remembrance of Rennala. The Lusat Glintstone Staff deals the most raw damage but increases FP costs by fifty percent. The Academy Glintstone Staff is the best option for mid-game before you reach 60 Intelligence.
Early game sorceries include Glintstone Pebble for reliable ranged damage, Great Glintstone Shard for more punch, and Carian Slicer for close-range melee damage that rivals physical weapons. Mid-game, Rock Sling provides excellent physical damage that staggers enemies, while Night Comet deals invisible damage that enemies cannot dodge. Late game, Comet Azur combined with the Cerulean Hidden Tear can melt boss health bars in seconds.
Armor for sorcerers should prioritize the Snow Witch Hat, which boosts cold sorcery damage. The Spellblade set boosts Glintstone sorcery damage. For general protection, the Carian Knight set offers decent defense without too much weight. Always stay below 70 percent equip load to maintain medium rolls.
How to Build an Effective Faith Caster
Faith offers more versatility than Intelligence because incantations cover damage, healing, buffs, and status cures. Level Faith to 60 or 80 depending on your build focus. The Erdtree Seal is the best pure Faith seal at high Faith levels. The Gravel Stone Seal boosts Dragon Cult incantations and pairs well with lightning-focused builds.
Essential incantations include Lightning Spear for reliable ranged damage, Black Flame for percentage-based damage against high HP enemies, Golden Vow for a massive damage and defense buff, and Erdtree Heal for powerful group healing. Dragon Communion incantations like Rot Breath and Ekzykes Decay apply Scarlet Rot, one of the most powerful status effects in the game.
Faith builds have access to some of the best buffs in Elden Ring. Golden Vow increases damage and defense by a significant amount for eighty seconds. Flame Grant Me Strength boosts physical and fire damage. These buffs stack with each other and with weapon buffs, making Faith characters exceptionally powerful when properly prepared.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
The biggest mistake new casters make is ignoring Vigor. Even mages need 40 to 60 Vigor because many enemies close distance quickly and boss attacks have large area of effect. A glass cannon build might work for some encounters but will frustrate you in fights where you cannot maintain distance.
Another mistake is neglecting your melee option. Even pure casters should carry a backup weapon for enemies that resist magic or when you run out of FP. Moonveil, the Carian Knight Sword, or any weapon infused with your scaling stat will give you a reliable fallback. Carian Slicer is also excellent as a melee substitute that costs very little FP.
