Elden Ring Nightreign: Release Date, Gameplay, and Everything We Know (2026)

Elden Ring Nightreign is FromSoftware’s standalone co-op spin-off announced at The Game Awards 2024. Unlike Shadow of the Erdtree (which was a traditional expansion), Nightreign is a completely separate game with roguelike mechanics, three-player co-op, and a new cast of characters. Here is everything confirmed as of mid-2026.

Nightreign Release Date

Elden Ring Nightreign launches on May 30, 2025 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC (Steam). The game is a standalone purchase — you do not need the base Elden Ring to play it.

A network test was conducted in February 2025, and player feedback was largely positive, though server stability was a common complaint during the test period. FromSoftware has since confirmed dedicated server infrastructure for the full launch.

What Is Nightreign?

Nightreign is a three-player cooperative survival action game set in a parallel version of the Lands Between. Each session lasts approximately 40 minutes and follows a three-day cycle structure:

  1. Day Phase (15 minutes) — Explore a shrinking map, fight enemies, collect loot, level up your character, and prepare for the night boss.
  2. Night Phase (10 minutes) — A boss appears. Defeat it to progress to the next day or face a game over.
  3. Final Night (Day 3) — The Nightlord boss appears. Victory ends the run.

The map shrinks with a mechanic called the Night’s Tide — a ring of acid rain that closes in, functionally similar to battle royale zone mechanics but diegetically consistent with the world.

Playable Characters (Nightfarers)

Unlike Elden Ring’s character creator, Nightreign gives you eight preset heroes called Nightfarers, each with unique abilities:

Roguelike Progression

Each Nightreign run is independent. You start at level 1 and gain levels rapidly during the day phase by defeating enemies. Loot is randomized within weapon categories — you might find a Bloodhound’s Fang with different scaling or an elemental infusion. At the end of each run, you earn Relic Dust used to purchase permanent upgrades:

  • Increased starting flask charges
  • Higher base damage resistance
  • Unlockable cosmetic skins for Nightfarers
  • New weapon categories in the loot pool

Map and Enemies

The map is a condensed, procedurally rearranged version of Limgrave with elements from later zones. Key locations shift between runs, but certain landmarks (churches, evergaols, minor erdtrees) appear consistently.

Enemy types include:

  • Returning Elden Ring enemies — Soldiers of Godrick, trolls, giant crabs, runebears
  • New Nightreign exclusives — Shadowborn knights, Nightflame cultists, and three original Nightlord bosses not seen in base Elden Ring

Connection to Elden Ring Lore

Nightreign exists in a parallel timeline where the Shattering played out differently. The Nightlord is a previously unseen outer god entity. FromSoftware has confirmed that while Nightreign is non-canon to the main Elden Ring story, it expands the cosmology of the Greater Will and competing outer gods.

Is Nightreign Worth It for Solo Players?

Nightreign supports solo play (one Nightfarer instead of three), but the game is balanced around co-op. Solo runs are harder — enemies scale down only partially, and you lose revival synergies. The matchmaking system supports both friend invites and quick-play with randoms.

What This Means for Elden Ring’s Future

Hidetaka Miyazaki has stated that Nightreign is an experimental project led by a different director within FromSoftware. It does not signal a permanent shift toward live-service games. The mainline Elden Ring team is reportedly working on an unannounced project.

For players who have exhausted the Lands Between and crave a new challenge, Nightreign offers a fresh way to experience FromSoftware combat in a fast-paced, replayable format. The roguelike loop gives it longevity that traditional Soulslikes lack — each run feels different, and the permanent progression system provides a tangible sense of advancement.
