Elden Ring Beginner Guide 2026: Everything You Need to Know Before Playing

Elden Ring throws you into the deep end from the very first moment. There is no hand-holding, no quest log, and no obvious direction. That is exactly what makes it one of the most rewarding RPGs ever made — but it also means a solid beginner guide can save you hours of frustration. Here is everything you need to know before stepping into the Lands Between in 2026.

Choosing Your Starting Class

Your starting class determines your initial stats and equipment, but does not lock you into any playstyle. You can respec later. Still, picking wisely makes the early game smoother.

  • Vagabond — The safest pick. High Vigor, solid Strength/Dexterity, heavy armor. Excellent for melee beginners who want to tank hits while learning enemy patterns.
  • Samurai — Starts with the Uchigatana, a katana with innate bleed buildup. Bleed is one of the strongest status effects in Elden Ring. Great for aggressive players.
  • Astrologer — The go-to for sorcery builds. Starts with Glintstone Pebble and Glintstone Arc, both excellent ranged options that let you kill enemies from a distance.
  • Confessor — A hybrid faith/melee class with healing incantations. Good for players who want utility spells alongside solid melee damage.
  • Wretch — Level 1, 10 in all stats, club only. Only pick this if you want a true blank-slate challenge run.

Recommendation: Pick Vagabond or Samurai for your first playthrough. They are forgiving, effective, and teach you the fundamentals.

Your First Hour in Limgrave

After the tutorial cave, you emerge into Limgrave. The game immediately shows you a golden knight on horseback. Do not fight the Tree Sentinel yet. Walk around him. Here is your priority list for the first hour:

  1. Unlock Torrent — Rest at the Gatefront Ruins Site of Grace (follow the road north from the starting church). Melina appears and gives you the Spectral Steed Whistle.
  2. Grab the Spirit Calling Bell — Return to the Church of Elleh at night. Renna gives you the bell and Lone Wolf Ashes. Spirit ashes summon allies in boss fights and tough areas.
  3. Collect Map Fragments — Look for the small obelisk icon on the brown map. Each fragment reveals the full area map. The Limgrave fragment is at the Gatefront Ruins.
  4. Get the Whetstone Knife — In the Gatefront Ruins cellar. Lets you change weapon affinities (Ashes of War).
  5. Find the Flask of Wondrous Physick — At the Third Church of Marika in eastern Limgrave. Mix tears for custom buffs.

Leveling Priorities

Stat allocation matters more than your starting class. For your first 40 levels, follow this priority:

StatPriorityReason
VigorHighestHP is everything. Aim for 20 by level 30, 40 by level 60. Survivability trumps damage output in Elden Ring.
EnduranceMediumEnough to medium-roll with your chosen armor. 15-20 is comfortable for most setups.
Primary Damage StatMediumStrength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Faith, or Arcane. Pick one and stick to it early. Weapon upgrade level matters more than stat scaling early on.
MindLowFP pool. Only invest if you cast spells regularly. 15-20 is plenty for hybrid builds.

Rule of thumb: If a boss kills you in two hits, you need more Vigor. If a boss kills you after a long fight where you ran out of flasks, consider Endurance or damage output.

Essential Early Game Items

Some items dramatically improve quality of life. Grab these early:

  • Golden Seeds — Increase flask charges. Found at the base of small glowing golden trees. Use two seeds for the first upgrade, then it scales.
  • Sacred Tears — Increase flask potency (how much HP/FP each sip restores). Found in churches. There is one at the Third Church of Marika.
  • Lantern — Buy from the merchant at the Liurnia Lake-Facing Cliffs for 1,800 runes. Attaches to your belt and provides hands-free light in caves. Massively useful.
  • Cracked Pots and Ritual Pots — Reusable throwing/ritual items. Found across the world. Craft fire pots for early ranged damage against clustered enemies.

Combat Fundamentals

Elden Ring combat is about patience, spacing, and timing. Here are the core mechanics:

Guard Counters

Block an attack with your shield, then immediately press R2 (heavy attack) after the block. This deals massive posture damage and is one of the safest ways to stagger enemies.

Jumping Attacks

Press jump then R2 during the jump. Jump attacks deal high posture damage and cannot be parried. They are excellent openers against bosses.

Poise and Stance Breaking

Every enemy has an invisible posture meter. Heavy attacks, guard counters, and jumping attacks fill it faster. When the meter fills, the enemy staggers, opening them for a critical hit (walk up and press R1).

Rolling and Invincibility Frames

Your roll has invincibility frames (i-frames) during the middle portion. Roll into attacks rather than away — this shortens the time your hitbox overlaps the enemy’s attack hitbox. Medium roll (equip load under 70%) is the sweet spot.

Where to Go First

Elden Ring is open-world, but there is an intended difficulty curve. Follow this path for a smooth early game:

  1. Limgrave (West and East) — Explore fully. Clear every cave, catacomb, and evergaol. You should be around level 25-30 before moving on.
  2. Weeping Peninsula (South) — Cross the Bridge of Sacrifice. Castle Morne is here. Good upgrade materials. Level to 35.
  3. Stormveil Castle — Your first legacy dungeon. Margit is the gatekeeper boss. Level 30-35 recommended. Summon Sorcerer Rogier (gold sign outside fog door) and use Spirit Ashes.
  4. Liurnia of the Lakes — After Godrick. Massive zone. Raya Lucaria Academy is the legacy dungeon here. Level 40-50+.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Fighting everything immediately — You can and should run past enemies. Torrent lets you bypass almost anything in the open world.
  • Spreading stats too thin — A jack-of-all-trades build does everything poorly. Focus Vigor + one damage stat.
  • Ignoring weapon upgrades — A +3 weapon is dramatically stronger than a +0 weapon. Smithing Stones are found in mines (orange-rimmed holes on the map).
  • Selling weapons — Never sell unique or boss weapons. You cannot get them back until NG+.
  • Not using Ashes of War — These are free, swappable weapon skills. Experiment. Some (like Storm Blade on straight swords) give melee builds a ranged option.

Summary

Elden Ring rewards preparation and punishes rushing. Spend your first few hours exploring Limgrave, upgrading your flask and weapon, and learning enemy patterns. Pick Vagabond or Samurai. Level Vigor to 20 early. Use guard counters and jumping attacks liberally. And most importantly — if you hit a wall, go somewhere else. The Lands Between are massive, and there is always another path.

The game gets easier the more you understand it. By the time you reach Stormveil Castle, you will feel the rhythm clicking into place. Good luck, Tarnished.
